Surrounded
by a grove of stately live oaks, the Bragg-Mitchell Mansion is
one of the Gulf Coast 's grandest antebellum mansions. When it
was built in 1855 by Judge John Bragg, the house was the center
of the lively social life of the thriving cotton port of Mobile.
Today, the mansion is the most photographed building in Mobile
and offers a rare opportunity to glimpse life as it was lived
in the Old South.
Restored
at a cost of over $1 million, the mansion is beautifully furnished
with fine antiques and exquisite draperies. The massive double
parlors and lavish dining room reminds one of a time when hospitality
was a way of life. Upon entering the spacious front hall, it is
apparent that the house was designed for entertaining.
The
distinct design of the house with its 16 slender fluted columns
and bracketed cornice combines many styles of the antebellum architecture
primarily Greek Revival and Italianate.
The
Bragg-Mitchell Mansion is a multi-use facility and may be rented
evenings and weekends for private parties and receptions or corporate
functions. The mansion and it's beautifully landscaped grounds
are popular settings for bridal teas and luncheons, rehearsal
dinners, weddings and receptions.
