The First Encounter
Michael proposed on a hike in my hometown of Tucson, Arizona. It was so unexpected that when he had asked my friends about a ring, they all had no idea and each suggested something different. But the ring was beautiful and it hardly mattered, we were so happy to be able to celebrate with my entire family, including my dad.
We wanted our wedding to reflect us, but mostly we just wanted our friends and family to have an awesome weekend. We chose what was important to us (the people, the band, the photographer, the videographer) and tried to have fun with the rest. Wedding planning is surprisingly stressful, and the longer the engagement, the more time you have to stress over tiny details. The best part was definitely the tasting – so much amazing food and wine!
The Big Day
We love the outdoors so were really hoping that the December weather would hold out long enough for our ceremony. It turned out to be an incredible day – warm and sunny. We like to think that my dad, who had recently passed away, was influencing the weather for us. But honestly, our favorite part was just having everyone we love in one room (and staying up late in our hotel room reliving the day and eating a sampling of all of the food that we had been too busy to eat – best surprise!).
We took a round-the-world backpacking honeymoon! We started in Antigua then continued throughout South America, New Zealand, Nepal, and India! It was quite the experience. Our favorite parts were hiking the W Trek in Torres del Paine, Chile, exploring Bolivia, camper vanning across New Zealand, and trekking to Everest Base Camp. At Everest, we saw a sign that read, “Got married 2 weeks ago. We were told if we survived this, marriage would be easy.” We couldn’t agree more – marriage been a breeze in comparison to our honeymoon!
