The First Encounter
I was visiting Jeff in San Diego for the Marine Corps Ball, and he proposed to me in the airport parking lot before I left to fly home. It was private and simple and perfect for us. On the flight home, a flight attendant complimented my ring. When I told her I’d just gotten engaged 30 minutes ago, she brought me a glass of champagne!
I had actually planned a big ballroom wedding and ended up scrapping the whole thing six months before the wedding. Jeff was deployed for most of the process but he helped when he could. Ultimately we ended up deciding we wanted to do something small and simple – so we decided on an art gallery ceremony and a restaurant reception. Even with eliminating quite a few wedding “necessities,” it was stressful at times. Luckily I had lots of help from my mom and sisters. My Maid-of-Honor, Ashley, made the invitations and did my hair on the day-of along with a million other things.
The Big Day
I found out two days before the wedding that my mom had donated the coat I’d intended to wear with my wedding dress. Also, it looked like rain. So of course we headed off to the mall for a coat and umbrellas. We got lucky – there was a perfect white coat on clearance at Macy’s, and Target came through with plenty of clear umbrellas. After that it was smooth sailing, which I’m sure I owe to my day-of-coordinator. I remember feeling extremely hungry right before the ceremony and my amazing photographer handing me a Cliff bar to hold me over to the reception. I remember my hands shaking and tearing up during the ceremony, and I remember the bridal party’s gasps of horror when my brand-new husband tried to wipe my tears after the ceremony and ended up smearing my mascara. Don’t worry, we fixed it! The reception was perfect. Everyone raved about the food, the cake – which I am still obsessed with – was perfect! Everyone just had a great time eating and talking and laughing together.
Unfortunately, we weren’t able to take a Honeymoon. But we’re hoping to do something great for our first anniversary!
