The First Encounter

My sweet husband proposed to me at sunrise on the beach in beautiful Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. He walked with me along the shore speaking words of love and encouragement as I bawled my eyes out. He knew I would forget all he said because of the emotion of the moment, so he wrote me a beautiful letter, which I cherish to this day. Our walk ended at a blanket decorated with my favorite flowers and candles, and we slow danced to our special song as the sun rose. As the song was ending, he got down on one knee and asked if I would marry him! Our sweet families came running down to us; they had been hiding so that they could share in the excitement with us.

In Preparation

We had a little over a year to prepare for our wedding. With the help of my Southern Weddings Planner, we managed to keep everything on track, even with our busy schedules as students. As important as the dress, flowers and other details were, our focus during this time was to prepare for our marriage relationship; we wanted to make sure we had a solid foundation starting our life together. We did premarital counseling over FaceTime since we lived 4 hours apart during our engagement. Gleaning wisdom from married couples in our church, explaining our day-to-day routines to each other, and exploring the fabulous world of budgeting was such a wonderful experience.

The Big Day

Thinking back to our wedding still brings tears to my eyes. It was amazing in every aspect. We were so filled with joy to have our family and friends surrounding us and celebrating the start of our amazing adventure together. The day could not have been more beautiful. It was a perfect 75 degrees and there was not a cloud in the sky, or joyously, a Florida Gator Football win. The ceremony was lovely and officiated by the pastor who led our premarital counseling. We said our vows, exchanged rings, and before we knew it, we were pronounced husband and wife. The reception was a big, happy party with great food and plenty of dancing for our families and close friends to enjoy. Our first dance was to a live performance of the song “When I’m With You” by Ben Rector performed by one of my bridesmaids and her boyfriend.

The Retreat

Our Honeymoon was the perfect blend of relaxation and adventure. Brandon and I love to explore, so we went to Costa Rica. We traveled to the Northwest region of the island to nap on the beach, eat yummy local food, and explore. One day we went on an expedition where we zip-lined, rock climbed, and whitewater tubed down a river. While we were there, we witnessed Costa Rican history: a hurricane made landfall on the opposite coast from where we were staying. All in all, the trip was the perfect start to our life as a married couple. It was relaxing, adventurous, and plenty of time to let it sink in that we were finally together after three and a half years of long-distance dating. We cannot wait to go back to explore some more of the beautiful island, Costa Rica.
