The Proposal

Tim planned an amazing surprise proposal in Austin, TX on the final night of a girls’ trip with my best friends. We were enjoying a cocktail (or a few) in the bar area of The Driskill hotel when Tim sent a note down, via messenger, and asked me to meet him in room 443. When I arrived to the suite, Tim was there to greet me with champagne, chocolate covered strawberries, and a marriage proposal. After the proposal was officially accepted, Tim asked my friends to come up and join the party. We then called our families and close friends to tell them the great news. After taking pictures, the group went to Eddie V’s for an amazing celebratory dinner!

In Preparation

Due to the short period of time between our engagement and my move to Chicago to start my graduate studies at Harris School of Public Policy at The University of Chicago, I had to make major decisions quickly.  Fortunately, my mom, Sallie, and I share the gifts of organization and decision making, and we thoroughly enjoyed the process of planning the wedding. It was such a blessing to have my mom in South Carolina to take charge of the planning since I could not always make it to meetings or see things in person. A happy place for our family is beautiful Lake Keowee in the upstate of South Carolina, so it was easy for us to choose The Reserve at Lake Keowee as the perfect venue for our special day. It combined Tim’s love of golf with my love of the lake and mountain region of our state. We found success choosing my dress at Hayden Olivia Bridal in Charlotte, and I selected the Anne Barge gown I had been admiring since becoming engaged. With the help of Upstate I Do Wedding Planning and Coordinating, we finalized the wedding date, band, vendors and many other big decisions within two months of the engagement – no procrastination on our parts! We had fun ordering southern touches, including SC embossed wine glasses and custom bottles of Coke, to place in the wooden wine crates that welcomed our guests to their cottages.  We also made the decision to only serve wines from the Schug Estate Winery in memory of our beloved Goldendoodle, Schug, who passed away during the planning of the wedding.

The Big Day

Our wedding day was absolutely magical. I got ready in a beautiful home in The Reserve at Lake Keowee, along with my bridesmaids, my mom and my soon-to-be mother-in-law. Tim and his groomsmen rented a boat and spent the morning on the lake. Close family friends hosted a Pool Party and Barbecue for all of the wedding guests staying in the The Reserve. I changed into my wedding gown in the Founders Hall Chapel, with the help of my mother, Sallie. When I was finished getting dressed, I did a first look with my bridesmaids, and then with Tim. The whole group then headed up to the Orchard Clubhouse for the 4:00 p.m. ceremony, which was held on the First Tier of the Great Lawn. After the conclusion of the ceremony, the guests went around the Clubhouse to the Front Lawn for cocktail hour. During this time, the wedding party and our families took pictures at the ceremony site, which was when the weather became uncooperative (thank goodness the Cocktail Hour was held in a covered area). Although the heavy rain caused a bit of stress for me, Tim decided to take advantage of the storm. He asked the staff at The Reserve for a mason jar and took it outside to collect the rain. He brought me the almost-full jar after the storm ended and said, “I thought we could freeze this and use it to baptize our children one day”. 🙂 It was such a heartwarming gesture and became one of my favorite wedding day memories. Once the storm was over, the wedding guests were escorted to The Great Lawn for the reception. The entire wedding party was introduced to AC/DC’s Thunderstruck. First dances were had, cake was cut, toasts were given, and the bouquet was thrown. Around 8:30 p.m., the Clemson Tiger mascot showed up and got everybody onto the dance floor, where they were entertained by the wedding band, Steel Toe Stiletto. At 10:00 p.m., our wedding planner, Ali Barham, and her assistants lined up all of the guests and gave them sparklers. The bands’ horns section gathered and escorted us to our getaway car, a 1949 Cadillac convertible.

The Retreat

We honeymooned in Greece, with the expert help of Maggie Condon-Campos, a Master Travel Planner with All Travel Guru. We visited Athens, Mykonos and Santorini.
