The Proposal

We live in south Alabama on the river delta. Although we are not good fishermen, we try our hardest, many times to no avail. After a long week of traveling, Wes invited me out on the boat with him to one of our favorite fishing spots. Of course, we weren’t catching anything…not a nibble, but he was insistent that we stay in that one hole. He asked me to marry him right there on our 19’ flats boat, Sea Biscuit, just the two of us. After he proposed, I learned that spot was the best place to catch the sunset.

In Preparation

We were together for 10 years before we got engaged. That’s almost unheard of in Southern culture, but for us, it was perfect. We knew we didn’t want a big to-do, but we wanted to incorporate our favorite things. We ultimately decided on a Southern, low-key backyard bohemian water wedding. We wanted good food, good people and a good time. In fact, we referred to the reception as a party. You know, to set the tone for the evening. Everything we did to prepare for the wedding was to keep the party going. And we did, all night long.

The Big Day

We were married under a centuries-old live oak at Blakeley State Park. It was a small wedding party, just the two of us and our puppy, Willie Nelson. As the sun was setting, I entered to Van Morrison’s “Into the Mystic.” After the ceremony, guests traveled to The Bluegill, where they were greeted with Don Julio silver, a nod to my Mexican heritage. Guests dined on Southern favorites: jambalaya and shrimp & grits. We arrived at the reception by boat and danced the night away with our favorite people in the world.

The Retreat

For us, Jamaica was a no-brainer. As avid water people and reggae-lovers, Jamaica just seemed like our second home. And it was. We loved the steel drums, the excellent food, friendly people and the island itself. We drank from coconuts, jumped into waterfalls and swam in some of the most beautiful beaches the Caribbean has to offer. It was an honor to contribute to this island’s tourism and national economy.
