The First Encounter

Walker and I were living apart for most of our engagement.  He had been transferred to Richmond, VA for his job, and I was living in London.  He came to see me for Thanksgiving and landed that day.  We went to lunch at our favourite pub, and Walker had planned to propose on a small square outside.  However, when he reached in his pocket, the bag which he thought had contained the ring, had earphones in it! Not paying attention, I walked into a grocery store to pick up some last minute items as I was cooking Thanksgiving Dinner that night.  Walker rushed in in a panic saying we had to go back to pub, that he had left something.  When I asked him what he had left, he couldn’t think of anything else to say but, “Your ring.”  I was SO excited I forgot that he actually lost the ring. The pub did not have the ring, and we spent 30 minutes on the streets of London looking for it. Finally I convinced him to go back to my flat and check his bag.  Sure enough, it was the first thing that fell out!

In Preparation

The first time I went back to Walker’s home, we went to his parents river house in Darien, GA, and I knew right away I wanted to get married there. I went to college with Lauren Fox and had been following her Instagram account for years. I knew I wanted her to do my wedding, and reached out almost immediately after getting engaged. Walker really wanted a New Orleans brass band to play, as I am from there, and he loves going to see them play when we are home for the holidays.  On Christmas Eve after we got engaged, we went to see Soul Rebels play and convinced them to play to at our wedding! I have to say, Lauren pretty much took care of everything else! From the few directions I gave her, she produced a wedding that was beyond anything I could have imagined.

The Big Day

Being in London meant that I could not be overly involved in every detail. On the big day, I arrived feeling like a guest at the most beautiful wedding I had ever seen! I couldn’t believe it was mine!  Our ceremony was in the front yard on the river and was short and sweet, and guests received Sazerac, a signature New Orleans cocktail, as they left. After cocktail hour, we moved to a field in the back and all I can remember is dancing for hours to a band I grew up seeing play. The only thing I regret is not eating enough of the food. Guests still rave to me about how delicious all Nick Muellers dishes were.

The Retreat

The next day, we jumped on a plane to New Zealand for two weeks. We travelled the whole northern island, hiking, fishing, rafting, bungee jumping and eating amazing food along the way. We stayed at the Boatshed in Waiheke Island, the Huka Lodge in Lake Talpoe (I cried when we left there), a cabin on the river at Poronui Lodge, and Cape Kidnappers in Hawkes Bay.  It was the perfect mix of action and relaxation.
