The Proposal

Ryan and I decided to ring in the 2017 new year on the island of Ocracoke, NC, where my parents have a second residence. Before sunset on NYE, Ryan asked me to take him to my “special place” that I’d been telling him about. He was referring to the Springer’s Point Nature Preserve, a short trail that leads out to the beach along Pamlico Sound where pirates roamed centuries ago. At the end of the trail we sat on a bench near the tree line to watch the sunset. As the sun went down, he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him.

In Preparation

We had 9 months to plan the wedding. I always wanted to be married outside, near the water, surrounded by live oak trees. I couldn’t find a venue locally that matched that exact dream, but the antebellum Octagon House and waterfront property came pretty close. I couldn’t have done any of it without our tireless wedding planner. Once the venue was booked, everything else eventually fell into place. I wanted a very southern and romantic look for the wedding, our planner helped execute that perfectly. We even buried the bourbon a month before our wedding date at our venue. As our big day approached, so did a category 5 hurricane. Luckily for us, the bourbon worked and the hurricane steered clear of us making way for the most ideal outdoor wedding day weather.

The Big Day

Friends told me our big day would fly by, and they were right. Ryan spent his morning deer hunting while I got ready with my bridesmaids and family at home. We all headed to the Octagon house that afternoon to get dressed. After all the hurricane stress, the weather was perfect. Somehow, not a single person there knew how to tie a bow tie. YouTube saved the day. My dad drove us down to the ceremony site by the water and that moment felt so surreal. I walked down the aisle to a solo violinist playing “At Last” by Etta James, and Ryan and I exchanged our own tearful vows. I think my favorite part of the day was after the ceremony while just the two of us took photos as husband and wife. It makes me smile every time I see Ryan wearing his ring. Our reception was mostly under a tent near the house, and we enjoyed dinner, dancing, and celebrating with our guests for the rest of the evening.

The Retreat

Ryan and I decided to spend our honeymoon on Ocracoke, where we got engaged. We spent a week relaxing, fishing, exploring the outer banks, horseback riding, boating, surfing, eating, and soaking in our first few days as husband and wife. We are looking forward to part two of our honeymoon (and babymoon!) as we head to Ireland next week.
