The First Encounter

If it hadn’t been for Tinder, I probably would have never crossed paths with Dave. I was born and raised in Germany and fortunate enough to live in some of the most amazing places all over the world thanks to my career in hotel management. Dave is a North Carolina native and Army Infantry Sergeant who just recently decided it was time to come home to the Carolinas to find a good Christian woman and settle down. It took some convincing from my girlfriends to sign up for Tinder and I quickly received a message from Dave, a refreshingly goofy guy who didn’t take himself too seriously. He pretty quickly asked me out on a lunch date and to my surprise, I found out it was his birthday that day! Dave was still pretty new to the area and hadn’t made any friends yet. The lunch date went so well that I asked him out to a local dessert place later that night to celebrate his birthday. After ice cream sundaes and birthday cake we went for a walk along Waterfront Park, overlooking lightning at Sullivan’s Island. It soon started raining and that’s when he kissed me for the first time… in the rain. Picture perfect beginnings… We continued strolling along the Battery and White Point Gardens, talked till the early morning hours and the rest is history.

In Preparation

In May 2016 we went on our first Germany vacation so Dave could meet my parents and explore my native country. Little did I know he had a proposal planned with my sister and brother in law who perfectly played along.  Pretending to go on a stroll with the kids in one of the beautiful parks in my hometown, they brought me to this little area where Dave had set up red roses and Champagne. Still oblivious to what was happening I was in complete shock when Dave dropped down on one knee and asked me to marry him surrounded by my family – it doesn’t get any better than that. And the moment he started popping the question it started raining again! We quickly started planning our wedding and with my husband’s Southern roots we envisioned a rustic wedding at a barn, seersucker bowties, Mason Jars, Sweetgrass roses and cotton wreaths. With all the details I had in mind I knew we couldn’t possibly do all the work ourselves, so I hired a wedding planner who would be able to help us execute my ideas and bring our vision to life. While I was working on putting together the unique little details and getting our vendors lined up, Dave built a stunning pallet bar and French doors for the big day. After almost an entire year of planning we were thrilled to see everything fall into place.

The Big Day

I’ve been looking forward to this day for so long and felt incredibly blessed to have six of my best friends travel from 5 states to be right there by my side. Especially my sister with family who came all the way from Germany. Our biggest challenge was that my parents could not fly in due to my Dad’s sudden illness that restricted his ability to travel. Every girl dreams about being walked down the aisle by her Dad and naturally, I was devastated. My wedding planner helped come up with ideas to involve my parents from across the miles to make this day special. My mom gave my sister her engagement ring for me to wear, her pearl bracelet and a bridal hankie with blue lace that had her perfume on it along with a heartfelt letter. One of the most priceless moments of the ceremony was when my little 3 year old niece plopped down on the grass to watch me walk down the aisle. My brother in law read my Dad’s speech and presented me with the necklace my Dad has worn for as long as I can remember. He wanted it to be with me on my special day, since he couldn’t. We live streamed the ceremony and I skyped with my parents. Some of our highlights included Bella, a red Vintage Truck, a fire pit for our S’mores favors and Little White Box’s photo booth Molly, a Shasta Camper, completed the rustic look we were going for. As with every wedding we had hiccups, my husband’s father fell the morning of the wedding and spent the entire morning in the ER ending up with 17 staples in his head. Yet as a true Marine Colonel (Ret.) he stood up there with his son and held his Best Man speech as if nothing had ever happened. It was a gorgeous day all around!

The Retreat

With family visiting from Germany for our wedding we decided to enjoy quality time with them in beautiful Charleston; we have the beach right at our door step! For our honeymoon we are looking forward to our trip to Europe during the Holidays later this year. We can’t wait to tour the gorgeous Christmas Markets and hopefully experience Dave’s first white Christmas in Germany. Fingers crossed for snow!
