The Proposal

New Years Eve weekend of 2016, my entire family decided to rent a beach house in Watercolor, Florida, for a “staycation.” Little did I know, Alexander had called the entire family to let them in on the secret that he would be proposing that weekend. He and my parents organized a big party with all of our closest friends and family. We got all dressed up for the party, set out, but once we got out of the car and started walking towards the beach, I quickly realized that we weren’t going to visit a friend. We walked towards the middle of the Alys Beach Gulf Green, where he got down on one knee and proposed while a photographer that he hired snapped pictures. Immediately after, we had a gorgeous sunset photoshoot on the beach and then headed back to the house where we celebrated with what was an engagement party all along. It was a magical weekend.

In Preparation

During wedding planning, Alexander was living in Louisiana and I was living at home in Florida. We knew that we wanted to get married in New Orleans, as that’s where majority of my family and some of his family are from. We wanted to bring those deep roots and New Orleans traditions into our wedding weekend. I had dreamed my whole life of getting married in Holy Name of Jesus Church on St. Charles Avenue, as my great-grandmother, grandmother and mother all got married there. I would be the fourth generation to walk down the aisle in this special place. Living in Florida and having to travel to NOLA to meet with vendors could be challenging at times, but with Alexander in Louisiana, it made things a lot easier. He was so amazing when it came to all things planning, he handled contracts, negotiating, and driving to New Orleans countless times to work out all of the details. We truly could not have planned half of the wedding we had without his tremendous effort and help.

The Big Day

Our wedding weekend was filled with so much fun, love, and excitement in the air. We kicked off the weekend with an amazing welcome party following our rehearsal dinner at Mardi Gras World on the Mississippi River, a place that is special to our family. We invited all 500 wedding guests, where we second-lined and danced all night long with Rebirth Brass Band. The wedding day was the most beautiful weather I could have asked for. There was so much excitement in the air getting ready all day and leading up to the ceremony. We decided to do a first look to take our bride and groom pictures. It was such a special moment that I cherish having. My favorite moment of the day was riding in a 1957 Rolls Royce with my dad from the hotel to the church. We were escorted by a New Orleans Police Department escort and the combination of the sirens, people waving on the streets of New Orleans, and the beautiful weather made for the most exciting moment of my life. The ceremony was purely magical and the reception was the biggest dance party, which included lots of crowd surfing and dancing on stage, surrounded by all of our closest friends and family, which is exactly what we had envisioned. We didn’t want it to ever end!

The Retreat

We chose to go to Eleuthera, an island in the Bahamas, for our honeymoon. We have been to the Bahamas many times but we had actually never been to this particular island before. There were two boutique hotels on the island that we had been dying to stay at, and so we decided try out both! We started the trip at The Cove, a small boutique hotel tucked into the most beautiful Caribbean cove of crystal clear water, with incredible food and service. We then moved to The Other Side, a 6 room hotel of luxury tents that are fully solar powered. The hotel grows its own food in the on site garden, and then local Bahamian women cook the most delicious homemade meals served breakfast, lunch and dinner for the hotel guests. It was an incredible experience.
