The First Encounter
Dan and I dated for 4 ½ years before he proposed and I was anxiously waiting for it. Dan and I love to travel and is something we do two times a year. I always “expected” it when we would go to these beautiful destinations but that is not how it happened. Dan proposed to me on a small road trip through Wisconsin. We took a walk outside along a lake and talked about our life together. It was perfect for us since we both love and have a deep appreciation for the outdoors.
In Preparation
New Orleans is a destination that Dan and I travel to every year. We absolutely love the food, music, art, and vibrancy of the city. When Dan proposed, we knew instantly where we wanted to get married. We wanted to share the love that we have for Louisiana with the people that mean the most to us. Since we are from Iowa we knew we would have challenges with planning a destination wedding but overall it was a lot less stress then I thought. We realized quickly that we didn’t have a lot of control so we just went with a lot of things since we knew that choices had to be made and we didn’t have the opportunity to physically be there.
The Big Day
Our wedding day was everything we envisioned; we wanted it to be relaxed and fun. We started the day taking pictures in city park, then from there we got donuts with our friends and family at District Donuts. Our favorite part was our ceremony, Dan and I decided to write our own vows and to make it even more special Dan’s uncle came down to perform the ceremony. We got to laugh, cry, and make amazing memories with our family and friends in a place that means so much to us.
The Retreat
We haven’t taken an official “honeymoon” but we did take a week after the wedding to unwind up north in the Boundary Waters. We love the outdoors so we spent a week camping and canoeing. It was very special to us since we went back to the same location that we took our very first camping trip together. It was such a great trip to really reflect on the love and support we got from everybody and to relive moments from our wedding.
