One day, Kevin planned a surprise day trip for the two of us in Charleston. I personally wanted to stop at various tourist traps, but Kevin insisted I’d love our surprise destination and he was right! After a fun-filled day with a horse-drawn carriage, we went to Waterfront Park pier at sunset. We sat on a bench and I looked over to Kevin on one knee proposing to me. I was completely clueless and was not expecting it at all. Kevin had hired a secret photographer to capture our special moment. Kevin created a beautiful, sparkly ring made just for me! After I said “Yes!”, we facetimed my family and told them the terrific news. We visited the beautiful pineapple fountain and celebrated to champagne. Charleston and pineapples are have become special to us.
Being the super sentimental person I am, I planned to include old memories in our planning while making new ones as well. I very much enjoy crafts so creating decorations and other DIY crafts for the wedding was very sun for me. I personalized the robe hangers for the bridesmaids and created sashes for the flower girls. Our family and friends live far away so Kevin and I decided to create welcome bags for our out-of-town guests. I also decided to do my own flowers as well. A friend of ours flew down peony buds from my parents Indiana yard. These are some of the bushes originally grown in my great-grandparents and aunt’s yards in Iowa. I removed and cleaned the lace sleeve from my grandma’s wedding gown that my aunt also wore to wrap around my bouquet. When changing my last name from Anksorus to Light, I wanted to incorporate real glass nightlight bulbs into boutonnières which turned out great. Then there was my gift to Kevin which was my favorite part. Kevin and I got to know each other on a Haiti medical mission trip so part of his gift was a passport cover with the coordinates of the hospital and mission where we had worked.
The Big Day
May 18th, the big day, was a day showered in love and a few raindrops. Having all of our family and friends in one place was absolutely surreal and getting ready with our guys and girls brought together a shared laughter. We exchanged gifts and many sweet prayers were offered up. Faith is the key to our lives and marriage so we wanted our ceremony to reflect that through worship songs, prayer, and communion. I surprised Kevin by playing a song I had sang and recorded the week before. We also wanted the day to be special for those attending and had pictures of couples we love as table decorations, and one birthday and two anniversary cakes to celebrate those with special days that weekend. Words can’t adequately express our thankfulness in remembering how everyone helped us celebrate. We are humbled by the generosity from those we love and were absolutely overwhelmed by their outpouring of love and support.
For our honeymoon, going somewhere we’d never been before was important, but we couldn’t decide where exactly we wanted to go. That was until Kevin saw an ad for St. Lucia. From the minute we got there, we were welcomed with treats at the airport until we left. We were absolutely spoiled for our honeymoon. Our sweet staff’s care honestly made those 10 days go by so fast and they were honestly some of the best days of our lives. We snorkeled, hiked, kayaked, and drove a dune-buggy up the coast. We also bathed in mud, swam in a waterfall, jet-skied, and learned the art of massage. These experiences were some that we will keep with us forever especially when we made cocoa tea and Johnny-cakes. The food was amazing and drinking from coconuts was definitely a new experience. It was a truly remarkable way to start our new life together!
