The Proposal

Samer whisked me away on a surprise trip to for our two year anniversary on May 7, 2017. Leading up to the trip, I had no idea where we were going until we landed in Venice, Italy. While floating down the Grand Canal and being serenaded by an Italian singer, Samer leaned over and started whispering something in my ear. Before I realized what was going on, he got down on one knee and he proposed on the gondola in front of the Basilica Santa Maria Della Salute. I started crying and screaming, “YES!”, at the same time! Everything was absolutely perfect. We ventured into the city’s romantic canals as local Venetians sang and shouted from the rooftops. He continued to surprise me for the rest of the trip as we traveled on to Florence and the Amalfi Coast. Fairytales do come true!!

In Preparation

A few days later, as we stared out over the Ponte Vecchio in Florence, we started asking each other what we wanted to do for our wedding.  With both of us being from Southern Louisiana, the only thing we knew for sure is we both had always dreamed of getting married in the iconic Saint Louis Cathedral in New Orleans. It’s the oldest Cathedral in the United States and is in the middle of the famous Jackson Square. It’s extremely hard to book for weddings with it being so well known. Being 5,000 miles away we were a little overwhelmed and nervous it would be booked, so we had my Mom look into it for us. There was a 2 year wait for the Cathedral. But wait! There just so happened to be one date available in the month of December which is the month we always wanted to get married. The city of New Orleans is magical during the holidays and twinkles with thousands of lights. We couldn’t wait to tell our closest family and friends we had secured December 29, 2017 to be married at the Saint Louis Cathedral! We were off to a good start and everything else began to fall into place over the next 8 months.

The Big Day

New Orleans is a city of culture and one of the most unique cities in the United States.  We wanted to showcase our hometown by giving all of our guests a taste of our Southern traditions. Our dearest family and friends traveled from near and far to join in the celebration. We began the weekend with a gorgeous sit-down rehearsal dinner at The Blue Room in the Roosevelt Hotel.  Dressed in traditional Arabic garb, we danced the night away after emotional speeches about the bride and groom. At midnight, we left each other for the last time as singles. The anticipation built over the next day and all of the planning was finally coming to fruition. After a day spent preparing with my bridal party, I headed to the church with my mom and dad. As the doors flung open and the music rang out, I caught my first glimpse of the love of my life.  It was a tear-jerking and unforgettable moment that I will forever cherish. The church was decorated for Christmas and was absolutely stunning. After the ceremony, we second lined from the Cathedral to the Ritz-Carlton with all 600 of our guests and shut down the streets of New Orleans. We were introduced by the best man as Dr. and Mrs. Samer Shamieh and entered the room in grand fashion with our Zeffa Band and Arabic singer. The famous Zydeco band Rock and Dopsie got the party started and then we finished off the night with DJ Timothy Lovelock, who also played the electric Violin. The crowd was entertained with Glo-sticks, CO2 guns and Tarboosh hats. Through it all, we made sure to include our southern traditions along with Arabic and Cajun influences.

The Retreat

We spent the first week in the winter wonderland of Switzerland. We strapped on our skis and went gliding down the Swiss Alps. We huddled by the fire in a modern lodge in the mountain village of Andermatt. But the highlight of the trip was a picturesque pool at Villa Honegg that overlooked the town of Ennetburgen.  We also explored the country and spent a few nights in Lucerne and Zurich. We then took a journey to the most romantic place on Earth. The Maldives is unexplainably exquisite. The water is so crystal blue that pictures don’t do it justice. We sun-bathed in an over-the-water bungalow and did nothing but relax on the beach. It was the only trip of my life that I did not want to come home. Our entire honeymoon was a once in a lifetime experience. From snowy mountains to sunny beaches, it was perfection.
