The Proposal

Christmas has always been a magical time for me, and Marc made it even more so by proposing on Christmas Eve. I was sure he was joking when he dropped to one knee with a Ring Pop in hand. Then he produced the real thing and, well, everything after that is a dreamy haze. After 10 years of dating, he knew the answer he was getting and he knew I didn’t need a grand gesture – just an authentic one. The Ring Pop is now under glass.

In Preparation

I’d love to say that I’ve had my wedding planned since I was a little girl, but that’s just not true. I did know that I wanted our wedding to be a unique, intimate celebration of who we are: a couple of old souls. I knew I wanted my dad to walk me down the aisle. Our biggest planning challenge was probably finding a balance between bucking tradition and including elements that we might regret not doing later (e.g., we didn’t do a garter toss). As far as our creative vision, our wedding planners were terrific in bringing what I described to life, and they brought us some amazing ideas too, like mariachis during cocktail hour.

The Big Day

We got married on Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, a beautiful Mexican holiday for honoring and celebrating deceased loved ones (and an appropriate wedding day for the La Mortes!). We were also blessed with beautiful Texas fall weather and no crises.

The Retreat

We took off for Cancun immediately after the wedding, spending a week being waited on hand and foot at Le Blanc Spa Resort. It was the best way to decompress after a frenetic week of wedding prep, and we started talking about our return trip almost as soon as we left!
