The Proposal

Mark and I were visiting Chicago right before Christmas. The city was covered in beautiful snow, and so Mark suggested we take a walk and see the Christmas lights at the zoo before heading to dinner. On our walk, he led us to a gorgeous spot by a pond that overlooked the city lights right at sunset. I was caught completely by surprise when he knelt down into the snow and pulled out a ring. Little did I know, he had a hidden photographer documenting the whole thing! It was nothing short of magical!

In Preparation

Our wedding was planned from afar without a wedding planner. We live in New Hampshire but wanted to get married in our hometown of Louisville, Kentucky. I was nervous about the undertaking, but our wedding photographer helped us with the best advice. She recommended we pick three things that were the most important to us and to not worry too much about the rest. We decided that we wanted a beautiful venue, our guests to have a blast, and for me to have the dress of my dreams. Keeping those in mind helped us decide where to best allocate our funds and also helped us keep the process in perspective during stressful times. Along with the help of our family and the most incredible vendors (shout-out to Amy Donohue Photography, Meghan McNeill at The Brown, my mom, and mother-in-law), the rest fell into place perfectly!

The Big Day

Our wedding day was a dream come true. From the moment the church doors opened and we saw each other at opposite ends of the aisle, we were both hit with the strongest feeling of love, devotion, and pure joy. That feeling is what I remember most about the day! Our reception was at the historic Brown Hotel in downtown Louisville. Before everything started, Mark and I snuck away to get pictures on the rooftop, which was one of my favorite parts of the day. It was just us, in 25 mph winds, dancing to no music and laughing at how incredible everything was. We then joined our guests and danced the night away to Tony and the Tanlines, our favorite local band. It was like our own private concert with our friends and family and was the perfect ending to a perfect day.

The Retreat

The morning after our wedding, we hopped on a flight to the Dominican Republic. We spent a week at The Excellence El Carmen, a beautiful all-inclusive resort. We had the most relaxing time lounging on the beach, swimming in our private pool, drinking out of coconuts, deep-sea fishing, eating the most delicious food, and just enjoying each other’s company. What a perfect first week of marriage! I will always remember that time together as one of the most incredible weeks of my life.
