The First Encounter

In November of 2015, we traveled to Boone, North Carolina to visit family and watch a Carolina Panthers game. The night before the game, Travis had planned a dinner out with the family. He told me that we would all meet at his grandparents’ house and leave from there. As we waited for the group to come, Travis walked into the living room holding a little black box in his hands. His first words were “so, I guess everyone knows why we’re here”. Obviously, I had no clue. Then, in front of everyone; siblings, in-laws, nieces, nephews, parents and grandparents, he got down on one knee and the next words were “Jessica, will you marry me.” Of course, I said “yes.”

In Preparation

We move a lot because of the military, and lived in Tennessee at the time away from family so we decided to have the wedding in Virginia Beach, VA. It was a place I went to every summer as a child. We visited the Norfolk Botanical Gardens and fell in love. We knew we had our venue. I wanted the feel of the wedding to be very personal, so I took on the daunting and crazy task of making all the save the dates, invitations, decorations, and favors myself. Many hours were spent on my Cricut machine making the invitations. Glitter coated every piece of our furniture. The glass mason jars, I etched our initials on, covered our living room floor for weeks on end. Being from out of town, we had to set up vendors through numbers, emails, and phone calls. A lot of hard work went into making our wedding truly ours.

The Big Day

My wedding day was a whirlwind of a dream. The day started off sunny and perfect. My bridesmaids and I got to the Norfolk Botanical Gardens early that day to start getting ready. At around one o’clock the skies opened up and there was a torrential down pour. My outdoor wedding was supposed to begin at six o’clock! When the rain stopped, my vendors, especially Liz, the event coordinator at the gardens, and my day of wedding coordinator, Carrie, worked miracles. I walked down the aisle in a beautiful garden to my amazing future husband. We lit our unity candle with our 9 month old son held tightly between us. We exchanged our vows and rings then walked under the military saber arch as husband and wife. We partied into the night with amazing food, the top music hits, and glow sticks. I did not want the day to end because it was everything I could have imagined and more.

The Retreat

We spent 10 days in Thailand for our honeymoon. Thailand is a place we both always wanted to visit but never thought we could. We stayed in Bangkok for two nights to enjoy the hustle and bustle of the city, visit the serene temples, and to eat everything in sight. We then flew to Phuket to stay at a resort on a little private island off the cost. We stayed in a beautiful villa with the most breathtaking view of the bay. We went island hoping, snorkeling, kayaking, fishing, and even got to pet an elephant. It was the epitome of paradise.
