The First Encounter

At the time of the proposal, Spencer was working third shift. We had not been able to see much of each other. I woke upon a Sunday morning, and Spencer told me he wanted to skip sleeping for the day and make the whole day about me. He cooked my favorite meal and surprised me with a bottle of French wine. This is when he proposed! He hid the ring on our cat’s collar, which I adored because our cat had been with us through thick and thin over the past 7 years. My husband knows me perfectly.

In Preparation

Both of our families are spread throughout the United States. Spencer and I had previously visited Key West and couldn’t get our minds off having the wedding at Ernest Hemingway’s Home. The location is both beautiful and unique. We called for details regarding having a wedding there, and the Hemingway staff was terrific. When I asked about event coordinators, the staff highly recommended Amy Lay. Amy made the whole wedding process fun! I was expecting the planning to be stressful, but Amy and all of my vendors helped everything go smoothly. One of the best recommendations Amy made to me was booking Old Town Manor B&B for our guests. Our two families were able to say they were one big family by the end of the trip due to the intimacy of Old Town compared to a chain hotel. I can’t recommend a Key West destination wedding enough!

The Big Day

When I woke up the day of our wedding, I had the normal jitters that were to be expected. However, I was excited to marry my best friend while being surrounded by 40 of my closest friends and family. Plus, I felt reassured having my stylist Barb do my hair and makeup. I knew she would truly represent me. After Amy and my photographer Megan arrived, it started sinking in that I was finally getting married. When I entered the Hemingway gardens, I couldn’t stop looking at the beautiful decor and my husband, of course. A bonus was having the Hemingway cats provide extra entertainment for the guests. I loved having a smaller guest list because Spencer and I were able to spend time with each guest throughout the night. I had someone ask me later if there was anything I would change about the day. I wouldn’t change anything.

The Retreat

The honeymoon was a needed end to a busy wedding weekend in Key West. Spencer and I stayed at Caneel Bay in St. John. From the moment the Caneel Bay ferry picked us up, until the moment we left, we felt like royalty. The resort was prime in April with minimal crowds and beautiful weather. The beaches were so blue and the snorkeling was memorable. Spencer and I went on a sunset sail around the island that we will never forget. We are already planning for our five year anniversary to be there.
