The Proposal

We had been dating for about 12 years at this point and honestly had not put pressure on ourselves about marriage, other than that we knew we wanted to continue to be with each other forever. One morning in late September, Matthew woke up at the crack of dawn to go pick up bagels for breakfast and I told him that I wanted to ride with and to let me wash my face and we would go.  Long story short he ended up leaving without me! Later he walked in the door with bagels in hand and explained he just wanted to let me sleep in and relax … which confused me because I was already awake haha! Anyway, so I sit down on the couch with him to eat my bagel and watch Sportscenter (a very typical Saturday morning) and when I opened the wrapper there was the most gorgeous ring I had ever seen just sitting on top of my delicious bacon, egg and cheese! He couldn’t have caught be off-guard more and as he pulled off the most amazing surprise, I of course, completely lost it.  He got down on one knee and said some of the most romantic things I can’t even remember because I was so overwhelmed. We drove out to this amazing property in Devotion, NC to see my family and friends afterwards and just enjoyed the best day ever!

In Preparation

Planning a wedding is stressful, but also so much fun!  I work in event planning and entertainment for a living and it was challenging for me to separate the two so we ended up getting an amazing planner to help with all the details and organization of the weekend.  It was so much fun reaching out to my favorite event vendors and being able to say, “Actually, this time it isn’t a corporate event, I am looking to book you for our wedding!” Our families were so excited and helpful throughout the entire process too.  We decided pretty quickly on a summer wedding and knew we wanted to get married up in Grandfather Mountain because the area means so much to the two of us and our families. To put it simply, it is our happy place and it meant the world to book our wedding up there. Everything leading up to July, whether it was planning, engagement parties, or even picking out the song list was a blast!

The Big Day

July 8th 2017 was a dream. Quite figuratively and literally – everything was so peaceful and all the months of planning led to this one day and once it arrived it went by so fast and we were in such a state of bliss the entire time it really did feel like we had dreamt the entire thing up.  We had an amazing ceremony at Grandfather where our guests walked over bridges to islands where they watched us read aloud our personalized vows to one another. The reception was held in a lake side pavilion down the street at the Camp at Eseeola where we maxed out the space with so many people we love. As we mentioned, we had been dating since the beginning of high school so we have been blessed to acquire a ton of friends throughout our relationship who joined our large families to celebrate with us. We had a 12 person brass band that we adore and who shocked our guest with their talent and energy as we literally danced the night away! The entire weekend was absolute perfection and more fun than we could have ever imagined.

The Retreat

The best thing about a honeymoon is you almost forget about it because you are so excited for the wedding weekend and then we got to wake up the next day and be like, “Oh yeah, we get to go to Saint Lucia tomorrow!!”  Matthew handled all of the details for our trip so I literally just got to show up which was the greatest gift he could have ever given me. It was as if the happiness and excitement never had to end. We visited the Sugar Beach – Vicroy Resort on the island situated with a private beach between the two mountainous Pitons.  We kept joking that it was like we were in a luxurious Jurassic Park! It is hands down the most gorgeous place we have ever seen. We had a private villa with our own pool and too many amenities to count and you get to travel around the resort in precious hot pink tut-tuts. We also had so much fun doing activities like a (rather strenuous but beautiful) hike up the Gros Piton, visiting the tree house spa and spending an entire day deep sea fishing where we caught mahi mahi that the chef prepared for our dinner later that evening. All-in-all it was a trip of a lifetime and I am so thankful I got to experience it with my husband.
