The Proposal

Josh proposed to me at a special spot at Discovery Green in Houston. We had a habit of sitting on the same bench and eventually we ended up calling it “our bench”. Josh had planned a special dinner and we went on a walkabout the park. A few feet before our bench, he started talking about how lucky he was and the amazing future we were going to have, then he got down on one knee right by our bench. He said “Will you marry me? Please say yes!” It was adorable, I laughed yes. We finished the evening with dinner and champagne. It was nice to have something so intimate be just about us.

In Preparation

Christmas is my favorite time of the year and Josh and I knew we wanted a winter wedding. With three brothers in the military, we knew that Christmas time would be the easiest way to get the entire side of Josh’s immediate family together. Since we were engaged in May, we quickly realized we had a few short months to get things rolling. I am a former wedding and event planner / caterer, so I was sure I could get everything planned in a very short time and feel comfortable about the vendors because majority were friends! While I was still working with our caterer and planner, A Fare Extraordinaire, I built our menu, diagrams, and main design and décor with their amazing team of planners. I was so lucky to know so many amazing vendors that were available to make the day perfect!

The Big Day

On our wedding day, we had a ton of special little things incorporated into the day. Our ceremony was officiated by Josh’s dad, former Command Sergeant Major R. Shawn Powell. He wrote the entire ceremony specifically for us – it was beautiful. I walked down the aisle to Sweet Child O Mine by Guns N Roses played on strings. Josh is predominately Welsh and Scottish and my family are passionate Irish, so we incorporated hand-fasting into our ceremony. My Mom had hand-sewn wool fabric in Josh’s family tartan made in Scotland flown in to make the hand-fasting ribbon and pocket squares. We had a bagpiper lead us out for our exit and I had a snow-blower – our friends even rang jingle bells tied with burgundy ribbon. Our seating tables had books that my Mom had been collecting from bookstores to really tie in the Library, accompanied by evergreen and single red rose bud vases.

The Retreat

We had a belated honeymoon in Ireland during the Summer. We rented a car in Dublin and drove through Waterford, Cork, Middleton and Dingle. We saw drove through the Wicklow Mountains, saw the Rock of Cashel, Glendalough Monastic Site, Fungi the Dolphin in Dingle, and the Cliffs of Moher. We paid tribute to my maiden name and stopped in a bar called McNamee’s in Loughrea. It was by far the most amazing trip we’d ever been on and we can’t wait to go back.
