Philip and I are not very good at keeping secrets from each other, we always want to share our excitement. So I thought I would be able to tell when this day came. Philip knew that when he proposed I wanted it to be intimate and just between the two of us. On Labor Day of 2017, which felt like a typical day for us, in my home adorned with flowers, I saw Philip, down on one knee, with the biggest smile on his face asking me to marry him. I ran to Philip and hugged him without saying anything. After what probably felt like years waiting for an answer from me, he finally said “Can you please say Yes now?” Without hesitation, I said “Yes!”. After we shared that perfect moment together, he surprised me with both of our families waiting at my parent’s house ready to celebrate us as a newly engaged couple.
I knew that I wanted a simple, elegant wedding. But the most important thing to us was that we get married in St. Joseph Co-Cathedral church in our hometown of Thibodaux, Louisiana in front of family and close friends. I soon realized how much goes into planning a wedding, and luckily I had my mother and sister to plan with me, down to the last detail. Shopping for my wedding dress was my most memorable wedding preparation experience. I brought my mom, soon-to-be-mother-in-law, sister, aunt, and grandmother with me to help find my perfect dress. I had no idea what type of dress I wanted, but I was counting on that bridal moment. The feeling I got in that first dress was like no other. At the end of the day, I knew that was the one. On my wedding day, the gown still felt perfect.
The Big Day
It’s just like everyone says – truly the best day of your life. It was surreal. I thought I would be anxious all day until the ceremony, but I enjoyed every minute of it. My bridal party prepped at my childhood home, and after we enjoyed the perfect day to take pictures before heading to the church. Once we were in front of the church, it hit me that this was it. The nerves started to set in, but everyone kept telling me “Just look at Philip”. I remember standing at the back of the church behind the glass doors and trying to find him at the end of the aisle behind everyone. Once I finally locked eyes with him, I never looked away. I couldn’t stop squeezing his hand throughout the whole ceremony. After mass was over, all of our anxieties went away and we knew it was time to have fun with our family and friends. We never left the dance floor the whole reception. The band, the food, the drinks..everything was perfect.
To make our honeymoon a relaxing experience, we chose to go on a Uniworld river cruise that was tailored to millennials. Philip had never been overseas and while I had been a few places in Europe, there was one place I had never been that we both wanted to visit – Paris. We cruised down the Seine River, getting to visit Paris, Normandy, Giverny, and so many other quaint cities along the way. Seeing the Eiffel Tower sparkle at night as a newly married couple was the most amazing and memorable experience, and a great start to our lives together.
