The Proposal
I’m known for being “bad at surprises,” and Blake surprised me twice in one day! I knew that a ring was being designed and that a proposal was coming soon, but I didn’t think it would happen that weekend- and especially not at his parents’ house as we stopped to wrap a gift for his niece’s “9th birthday party.” After a sweet proposal, we went to the birthday party (read: engagement party) where Blake surprised me again by having my family in attendance! My family lives in Kentucky, so I was shocked they had driven five hours to celebrate!
In Preparation
One of my favorite parts about our wedding was that it truly took a village to make our big day come to life! I’m from Kentucky, my husband is from Mississippi and we got married in Florida. At the time, I was living in Austin, Texas, and my wedding planner lived in Mississippi. To top it off, Blake and I have always been long distance and saw each other at most twice a month. My vendors were from Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, Texas, Florida and Illinois, and they all came together to make the day truly unique. I was blessed to have friends as my planner, hair dresser and makeup artist (and became friends with my other vendors too)! While it was tough to plan a wedding away from my groom, family and wedding planner, we made so many memories on the different trips for my wedding gown, bridesmaids dresses shopping, venue tours, alterations and etc.!
The Big Day
I still can’t believe how quickly the big day came and went, or how many people traveled to 30A for our destination wedding. Both Blake and I come from huge families and have been blessed with many friends, so an intimate destination wedding was never part of our plans. 200 of our closest friends & family from all over the US (at least 12 different states were represented) joined us for a beautiful ceremony & a reception filled with lots of dancing and hilarious children. While there were several touches that made our day “us,” like catering from our favorite hole in the wall seafood restaurant, a cookie cake and dancing to “Shameless” by Garth Brooks for our first dance… one of the most special parts was that our preacher wrote a wedding message specially for us based around the scripture Blake highlighted in the Bible he proposed with.
The Retreat
We started our honeymoon off with a trip to New Orleans to get me an emergency passport instead of departing for our honeymoon to Mexico. I didn’t realize you couldn’t fly to Mexico with the passport card I had (talk about a big mistake 18 hours into being a wife), so we were delayed to our honeymoon by three and a half days. The people at Delta, the New Orleans Passport Office and our parents went above and beyond to help us get to Mexico as early as possible and make the most of the mishap. Once we got there, we loved it!
