The Proposal

After 3-1/2 years together Dustin and I were talking about marriage so I knew a proposal was imminent. But I was surprised by when and where it happened. My mother was in town and we had dinner plans with her and my sister. I thought it was suspicious that Dustin made dinner reservations where we had our first date. He said he would meet me there. When my mom and I arrived, the hostess handed me a card and a rose and it was the beginning of a scavenger hunt. At each place, I was given a rose and another card with a clue. We ended up in Columbus Circle where Dustin was waiting with a bouquet of roses. He got down on one knee while my sister (and many tourists) captured the special moment. We celebrated dinner at The Robert, a restaurant overlooking Columbus Circle and Central Park. I was deliriously happy and starved at this point!

In Preparation

We knew we wanted vibrant colors, tropical vibes, and flamingos. Dustin and I love living in NY but also love vacationing anywhere warm; where he can golf, I can play tennis and we can meet up later by the pool. And I wanted fun, modern and somewhat quirky touches that fit our personalities but would still be appropriate for a formal wedding. I had so many Pinterest boards with a clear vision and tried to incorporate tropical touches in everything from the custom invitations, flowers, bridesmaid’s gifts, guest bags and everything at the ceremony and reception. I even had a piece of Hawaiian fabric wrapped inside my bridal bouquet that my great grandmother bought 50 years ago.

The Big Day

I awoke at 6 am and enjoyed the morning solitude overlooking the ocean. I was in such a peaceful state and so overwhelmed with joy and gratitude. Soon, all my bridesmaids came for hair and makeup in my suite. I was excited to give them their gifts and we all enjoyed a fabulous champagne brunch courtesy of The Breakers. My friends were emotional and happy for me. It was special getting ready with my mother, sister, new mother and sister-in-law. When I walked down the aisle, I wanted to cry but also take in every moment. It was a little intimidating knowing that all eyes were on me. My father was crying for me as he walked me down the aisle to the violin strains of “I Can’t Help Falling in Love with You”. Dustin and I held hands the entire ceremony and held each other in a loving gaze the entire time. He was so handsome and I was overjoyed to marry the man of my dreams in front of family and friends.

The Retreat

We stayed an extra day at The Breakers to mingle with family and friends who came from out of town.
We took a short flight to Abaco in the Bahamas. We had a beautiful villa with a private infinity pool. The front of the home was on the beach and the back went out to a golf course. Dustin golfed while I drove the golf cart and kept score for him, we played tennis, had a couples massage, and took a boat ride to see the famous swimming pigs. Mostly, we relaxed and watched beautiful sunsets and relived the incredible fairy tale wedding we just had.
