The First Encounter
Patrick proposed to me at the first apartment we shared together. We babysat his nephew then went out for a low key meal at my favorite italian restuarant in dc. While we were out he had his friend deliver flowers, champagne, and set up pictures from our more than 10 years of dating! It was understate and not expected as I was wearing black yoga pants and still sweaty from the gym! I knew something was different though when he told me I could order anything I wanted off the menu – including appetizers!
I always knew I wanted a southern wedding, and when I found Lowndes Grove, it was love at first sight! Since my fiancé and I both live in Virginia, our first step was to bring on the talented Cibi Events to help me pull my vision together. I wanted the wedding to be bright and breezy with a blend of texture and pattern. We chose a soft peppermint green and peach as the accent colors and a soft creamy white as the primary color. I also wanted pieces that reflected our home, and my “eclectic” style, so we incorporated some fun accessories throughout.
A few of my favorite details were; the custom watercolor we had designed for our monogram, which incorporated the venue, a crest of flowers, the iconic Ravenel bridge and our precious pup, Winnie, the bagpipe player to honor the Scottish side of our family, 1.00 scratch-off tickets at each place setting, which is a family tradition in my Fiance’s family for all big gatherings, the high school & sweat heart signs on our chairs, and our truly fun “high five” cake topper which totally expressed the vibe we wanted for our wedding day!
The Big Day
Where should I begin? The day could not have been more magical. I had not even thought about how much fun I was going to have, hanging with my bridesmaids, getting our hair and makeup done, while sipping mimosas. When my bridal bouquet arrived, is when it really hit me that this was finally the day I had been dreaming of.
When I stepped into my Alvina Valenta dress, I felt like running down the aisle to my guy, and could not wait to do our first look. When I finally had a chance to see the reception set up, I was speechless, Cibi and her team had created my dream wedding, right down to the beautiful escort card display.
For cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, an oyster bar was set up and champagne were served on the lawn along the edge of the Ashley river, and then guests were seated for dinner under a beautifully lit tent.
The Adrian Duke Band really rocked it and got everyone out of their chairs to dance, which was at the top of our priority list. It ended up being really cool that they were from our home state of Virginia! Plus the lead singer’s voice reminded us of Van Morrison – one of our absolute favorites.
We could have danced all night, I don’t believe I have ever felt so filled with joy.
We stayed at the Four Seasons in Anguilla, which is in the British West Indies. We flew into St. Maarten and took a quick boat ride over to our hotel which was on Barnes Bay and enjoyed a relaxing week swimming, snorkeling, and enjoying many amazing meals. Also lots of lounging!
