The First Encounter
Michael and I had always wanted to go hiking in the mountains, so we made plans to visit Pisgah National Forest and DuPont State Forest. During our hike, we came across Hooker Falls, and Michael asked a couple in passing if they would take a picture of us with the waterfall in the background. Once we took the photo, he asked if they’d take one more. He then started digging in his bookbag. Michael got down on one knee, presented the most gorgeous ring, and proposed. I said yes, of course! I’m so happy that we were able to capture that memory in a picture.
We chose to have our wedding at Sheraton Raleigh Hotel because my father had an established relationship with them, holding his annual Military Ball for the past number of years. Working with their event coordinator, Lauren, was seamless, and my aunts handled the actual planning of the wedding entirely. I only had two requests: (1) no flowers and (2) plenty of bling! It was also important to me to include some New Orleans culture since my family is from Louisiana, so we planned on including a Second Line, which is a celebratory parade with the accompaniment of brass band music. The overall atmosphere I wanted to create was a fun and light-hearted good time. I believed that if we kept that as our focus, everything else would fall into place.
The Big Day
The “Big Day” could not have gone any better. It truly was a fairytale come to life bringing a day filled with love and laughter. I remember having to pause at times just to take in the awe-inspiring experience of having our closest friends and family there to celebrate me and Michael’s first day towards forever. Our best memory from the day is hands-down the second line into the wedding reception! All of our guests and bridal party got so into it and it really set the atmosphere for the rest of the reception. We were so happy to bring New Orleans flare to North Carolina!
For the honeymoon, we spent a week in Cancun at the all-inclusive Riu Cancun resort. There, we had the perfect mix of relaxation, fun, and adventure. Our favorite outing was Coco Bongo, a one-of-a-kind live show filled with singing, dancing, acrobatics, and acting. It is definitely a must-do experience! Also, we went on an excursion in the Mayan jungle. During that trip, I faced a fear of heights and jumped off a cliff into a cenote. It was very exhilarating, but I don’t see myself doing that again! Our honeymoon kicked off a lifetime of unforgettable, bucket-list worthy memories together.
