The First Encounter

Tom had tried to propose several times but delayed flights, bad weather, and a broken heater delayed his plans. The night Tom proposed he took me to the restaurant where we had our first date. The restaurant is located on an oceanfront boardwalk in Virginia Beach so after we finished dinner we took a walk along the beach. Along our walk, we stopped to watch the waves rolling in under a bright moon. Tom then dropped to one knee and proposed. At first I thought he was joking and then he pulled out the ring. I was completely surprised.

In Preparation

Tom was gone for most of our engagement but thankfully I had the help from amazing wedding planners, family, and friends. I am originally from south Louisiana and always thought I would have a traditional southern wedding; however, Tom is from Ohio and we wanted to make sure to include his taste. Our theme was based on an old southern hunter’s feel where we had soft flowers with hints of pheasant feathers and deer antlers to include Tom’s hobbies. Tom and I felt very blessed to have so many people care about our special day and it was fun to celebrate with them even through the preparations.

The Big Day

You never know what type of weather you will have in the winter in Virginia Beach. The weekend before our wedding it was 70 degrees but a blizzard in DC brought us sleet, freezing rain, and snow on our wedding day. Our planners, Stacey and Heather, made sure that our day still went on without complications. All of our vendors were amazing and braved the icy roads to make sure we still had our special day. Amanda, our photographer, came prepared for the cold, slushy weather and took amazing pictures. Tom and I had so much fun celebrating with everyone at our reception. The men were able to enjoy a cigar bar outside thanks to the Founder’s Inn for providing heat lamps and fire pits. We had amazing food and great dancing. Tom and I felt very loved and lucky to have our friends and family together.

The Retreat

We decided to take a road trip out west visiting many national parks in southern Utah and northern Arizona. Our two favorite places were Zion National Park and Sedona, AZ. Zion was beautiful and we enjoyed the hiking trails. We stayed in a lodge in the park and enjoyed relaxing in the outdoors. In Sedona, we stayed at a Bed and Breakfast in walking distance to several restaurants and shops. We also went on a wine tour in Sedona which we both enjoyed.
