The Proposal

The proposal was held at Maggiano’s, my favorite restaurant in Columbia, Maryland. LaFayette was so sweet and was reminiscing of the journey of our relationship. I had no idea it was about to happen. It happened on Christmas Eve of 2014. The next month LaFayette’s nephew was diagnosed with leukemia. He was only 5 years old. It delayed the wedding, but it was a very sweet time for the family to be there for one another in that difficult time. In the summer of 2017, the LaFayette’s father was then diagnosed with lung cancer, after we had already planned to have a destination wedding. This was really hard on us, as you could imagine. We received the blessing from his father to go ahead with the wedding plans. Although his dad was unable to make it to the wedding, he watched it on live stream and has since started treatment and is doing well.

In Preparation

In discussing where the wedding was going to be held, we had several options. Jamaica was decided as the best option, as it was affordable and safe. Even though both of our mothers were originally discouraged by the idea of a destination wedding, they both had a blast. Planning a destination wedding was very easy. For the most part, the resort took care of the details. I have a passion for all things decorating, so I added a lot of personalized decorations such as the guest book, itineraries for the guests, bridesmaid bouquets, boutonnieres and corsages, and centerpieces.

The Big Day

On the day of the wedding, it rained all morning. We were determined to make this wedding happen rain or shine! LaFayette gave me a stunning sapphire bracelet for my something blue. The rain ended up holding off just long enough for the ceremony! The ordained paster was a one of our close friends and we wrote our own vows to one another. I sang Tamia’s song, Day One and tears were spilt, definitely not LaFayette’s ;). Then it was time to party. The DJ gave us a true Jamaican wedding, where even the waitresses were on the dance floor.

The Retreat

The honeymoon was a little gloomy, as far as the weather, but we were overjoyed at the occasion. The next couple of days was filled with spending time with the family that remained after the wedding. We had great food and relaxed in the hot tub, since the weather was rainy. We even went to a Michael Jackson Concert!
