The Proposal

Ben told me that we would be going to view some art on the Beltline, so we grabbed dinner at our favorite Mexican restaurant before walking over to the ‘event’. As we were walking down the path, Ben acted as though he needed to run ahead of me to see if we were headed in the right direction for the event he had been told about. I stopped walking, standing still in confusion, and before long, he was walking back towards me with my German Shepherd, Bronx, who was wearing a backpack and a bowtie. He asked me to grab a note that was in Bronx’s backpack. The note was written from him, stating that he had thoroughly investigated Ben and that he approved of the idea of him joining our pack. After reading the note, Ben got down on one knee and asked me to marry him.

In Preparation

We were both very laid back about planning the wedding, as we really just wanted it to be a time of joy and celebration. The most important thing to us was that the people who we loved were reflected in the big day. We found ways to incorporate family members and friends beyond the traditional wedding party. For example, rather than having one wedding cake, we asked loved ones to bring their favorite homemade dessert to set up at the reception. We were very excited to be getting married at a vineyard in Dahlonega, and we visited there many times before the wedding just to sip some wine and daydream about what was ahead.

The Big Day

The entire wedding party spent the night before the wedding at a cabin in the mountains, and we were thus able to spend the day of the wedding together, drinking mimosas, listening to music, and getting ready at a relaxed pace. It was the most beautiful spring day, and everything went exactly how we had hoped that it would. The ceremony was equally infused with emotion, spirit, humor, and dogs (our poodle walked down the aisle with a bridesmaid), and we danced the night away at the reception.

The Retreat

We were very blessed to be gifted a week’s stay at a condo in Hilton Head by friends of ours. We relaxed on the beach, read a lot of books, and cooked dinner from the condo at least half of the nights of our trip. It was really nice to be able to enjoy such a slow-paced week in the sun after the wedding, and we were thankful that we had decided to spend our honeymoon taking it easy and just enjoying one another’s undivided attention.
