The Proposal

He proposed the day we returned to Okinawa from a trip to Thailand and Bali. That evening as we sat inside, we reminisced about our trip over a bottle of wine, and decided to watch the sunset on the porch while listening to music and the sound of the ocean below. As the sun set, we decided to dress up to walk down the seawall to dinner. As I stood up to go inside, he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him, with all the perfect, private details that make the moment so special.

In Preparation

We have a similar love for travel, music, the ocean, eclectic foods, and the feeling of being home, so we wanted all of those elements to be shared. In honor of Veteran’s Day and the military influence that brought us together, we had paper airplanes flying overhead and engraved American flag sunglasses as party favors. The dress took months of fittings from concept to design with a talented seamstress. I was most excited about incorporating the lace that my grandmother had sewn on my mother’s wedding dress that she handpicked in Belgium. Jennifer Matteo Event Planning brought our inspiration to life capturing Mediterranean beauty in a classic Floridian home. I described to her our vision and trusted her creative talent throughout the process. They handled the details during the day immaculately so we could enjoy the precious opportunity to spend time with our family and friends.

The Big Day

Our immediate families stayed the weekend at the B&B wedding venue, which helped it feel like we were getting married at home. The ceremony was held under a gorgeous live oak tree with strong roots and Spanish moss covered branches that stretched out over our guests, which was symbolic and special for exchanging our vows. We incorporated live music and our favorite foods from our travels. The only hitch came while the best man was giving his toast, a Florida downpour began, misting at first and then truly raining. It was over as quickly as it began, and just in time for the father-daughter dance to begin under the moonlight. Instead of cake, we had cannolis and soaked up the end of the night with pretzels and scotch. It was incredible being surrounded by love, family, and friends who had traveled from around the world to share our happiness and excitement.

The Retreat

Our honeymoon was getting the opportunity to finally live on the same continent together! As soon as we settled into our new home, we took sailing lessons together and now spend as many weekends on a sailboat as we can manage. Our first sailing trip was on a charter from San Diego to Catalina Island which was an amazing learning experience. We look forward to sharing our adventures with family and friends as they come out and visit.
