The Proposal
Jon proposed while we were on a weekend trip up the coast of Big Sur, California. He got down on one knee when we stopped at Pfeiffer Beach. The area surrounding us was stunning with amazing rock formations in the water. He planned the moment perfectly by hiring a photographer to capture the special occasion just as the sun was setting. I was overcome with emotion as he put the ring on my finger and he whispered in my ear that the photographer was standing nearby. We had a lovely engagement shoot on the purple sand followed by a romantic dinner.
In Preparation
Preparing for the wedding was a little difficult as Jon was living across the country in California. I envisioned a glamorous, fairytale theme with a southern twist. I was fortunate to quickly find a venue that fit the look I was going for. Italy is one of our favorite destinations and The Farm at High Shoals mirrored all of the Italian details that we wanted to incorporate into the ceremony and reception. It was also important to us that we include more personal aspects such as my great-grandmother’s brooch on my bouquet and peach bourbon jam in mason jars prepared by my grandmother and I for guests to take away. My sister was the makeup artist and my mother, owner of Beyond the Bloom, was the floral designer. Lastly, we chose to have wishing trees at the reception to act as our “guestbook” to capture that whimsical, fairytale feeling and to make our guests feel like part of the ceremonious affair.
The Big Day
It was a beautiful, sunny day when we arrived early to our wedding venue, The Farm at High Shoals. While I was getting ready with my girls in the bridal suite, I read the sweetest letter that Jon wrote for me. It was so exciting to watch my big day vision come to life and luckily, the afternoon rain that was forecasted held off. Jon’s father officiated the ceremony and my father walked me down the aisle as a harpist played live music. Just as the ceremony was ending, a rainbow presented across the sky It was magical! For our first dance, Steve Tyrell sang and our guests dined on southern fare like shrimp and grits, sweet tea, and brined fried chicken from our favorite local restaurant in Athens (Mama’s Boy). The night ended with a dazzling sparkler send-off.
The Retreat
We had a short honeymoon right after the wedding at Chateau Elan Winery & Resort in Braselton, Georgia. It was about an hour drive from the reception which was so nice. Jon and I took full advantage of all the amenities on the property and enjoyed the spa, winery, and restaurants. We’re also planning a longer honeymoon in May where we’ll explore the Amalfi Coast and Tuscany!
