The Proposal
Marcus proposed to Alex on Halloween of 2020, the day before her thirtieth birthday. They hiked to a waterfall at Deep Creek Lake in Maryland, where Marcus got down on one knee and popped the question. Following the proposal, Alex and Marcus celebrated throughout the day and night with friends and family at a picture-perfect lakeside cabin. Since it was Halloween, the evening festivities also included a costume party and silent disco, which was so memorable!
In Preparation
Alex and Marcus’s first vacation as a couple was to Tulum, and it was one of the first locations they talked about selecting as their wedding venue. They both knew it would be tough to pull off, but also knew how special it would be to have their friends and family all together in such a beautiful place. Once Alex and Marcus locked in a date with the property, Akiin Tulum, it was “go time.” Their planner, Sofia of Magnolia Weddings, was so helpful with securing vendors and guiding the couple through the process of planning a destination wedding. They decided on most of the decisions within the first three months, which made the rest of the time leading up to the big day more relaxed. Because more travel than usual was involved, Alex and Marcus understood that a percentage of guests wouldn’t be able to attend. The headcount was just over eighty guests, which made their ceremony and reception intimate and amazing.
The Big Day
The wedding morning started with a vinyasa class led by Sara Ashley Yoga for Alex and her bridesmaids. Marcus and his groomsmen opted for a bountiful breakfast. Anticipation was at an all-time high for the couple until their first look around 1:30 pm. The eager couple then decided to take portraits, pictures on the beach, and pop champagne together before they were even married! The ceremony was led by a close friend and poet, Scott Ratliff. A cocktail hour during sunset with live saxophone and lots of margaritas followed the nuptials. The newlyweds and their guests had dinner in a dimly lit palapa where toasts and family-style food commenced. Each guest’s dinner plate held a handwritten personalized note letting them know why Alex and Marcus were so appreciative of them. The band started playing after dinner where attendees let loose on the disco ball dancefloor. Alex and Marcus decided on an outfit change before dancing, which allowed for a little alone time together. The reception went until about 1 am and was a night for the newlywed couple to remember!
The Retreat
Following the wedding and reception, Alex and Marcus hosted a farewell brunch at Zorba, the property where the couple and their guests stayed during the wedding weekend. Guests enjoyed local fare from the on-site taco stand and relaxed by the pool while reminiscing about funny stories from the prior evening. The newlyweds then spent a few days in Tulum with family and close friends enjoying the ocean and nearby dining spots. After everyone finally departed, Marcus and Alex traveled to Excellence Resort in Playa Mujeres for rest and relaxation for the next four days. It was such a treat for the busy couple to spend time alone together, reflecting on such an incredible event. The couple plans to honeymoon in Alex’s mom’s home country of Thailand in the winter of 2022.
