The Proposal
Chas proposed the day before his 30th birthday. We had a birthday party planned with all of our family and friends on his birthday, so he asked if I wanted to go to dinner just the two of us the night before so we could celebrate. He had an elaborate plan to take a walk past my first apartment where we had our first kiss and propose there, but I got in a minor fender bender that afternoon which threw everything off! He ended up proposing in our living room as we were getting ready for dinner. I was completely surprised. We had an amazing time celebrating just the two of us that night, and the following night we got to celebrate with friends and family at his party.
In Preparation
Wedding planning was pretty low stress for us. Because the wedding was in the winter and not during typical “wedding season,” all of our first choice vendors were available on our date. Another huge bonus for us was that both my sister and his brother had just gotten married the year prior, so they were hugely helpful in guiding us and giving us helpful tips through the process. We decided which aspects were most important to us and started there, and then all the little details fell into place. We created a vision and stuck to it without constantly second-guessing and changing our minds. The end result was a beautifully emotional and personal ceremony and “winter wonderland” inspired party that our friends and family still talk about to this day.
The Big Day
Kate wanted a classic, romantic winter wonderland with shades of gray, silver and white. Her big day began at the Hyatt Hotel in downtown Buffalo, with the bridesmaids getting their hair and makeup done. Kate surprised her girl gang with the “champagne bottle” filled with confetti! The ceremony took place at a small church right around the corner from where Chas was raised. The florals were white, pale blue and lots of greenery. The winter wonderland theme carried over to the reception as well, with flowers adorning the tables. For their first dance, Kate and Chas started off slow then swung into a full out choreographed dance!
The Retreat
We agreed we wanted a big once-in-a-lifetime type honeymoon in Italy, but because we got married in the winter we decided to postpone our trip until May. Immediately after the wedding we took a “mini moon” in which we spent 3 days at the Belhurst Castle, which is a romantic property on Seneca lake. We enjoyed a lot of time at the spa, drinking local wine, eating delicious food, and reminiscing about our amazing wedding. When May came around, we took our dream trip to Europe. We spent the first leg in Amsterdam, where family friends live. The rest of our trip we toured Italy, spending time in Florence, Tuscany, Rome, and the Amalfi Coast.
