The Proposal

On New Year’s Eve, Bennett proposed to Rachel atop Mount Washington in Pittsburgh after the two rode the historic Incline for what she believed was simply a dinner overlooking the city. Unbeknownst to Rachel, both of their families had quietly gathered nearby, her parents and sister, along with his parents, twin sister, and brother-in-law, to witness the moment unfold.

Just as they reached the overlook, a cold rain began to fall. While Rachel hurried toward the restaurant to escape the weather, Bennett suggested they stop for a moment to admire the view, a request that felt perfectly natural, given his longtime love for Pittsburgh. Completely unaware of what was about to happen, Rachel listened as he told her how much he loved her before dropping to one knee.

In an instant, the rain, wind, and cold seemed to disappear. Moments later, their families stepped forward, transforming the surprise into an intimate celebration with their favorite people.

The evening continued with dinner overlooking the city, followed by fireworks and the New Year’s Eve ball drop, a perfect ending to one chapter and a beautiful beginning to the next.

In Preparation

From the very beginning, Rachel’s wedding was shaped by memory, tradition, and a deep connection to place. Having grown up dreaming of their weddings together, it felt especially meaningful for Rachel’s cousin, Sunny, to step into this season alongside her not only as her matron of honor, but as her wedding planner as well.

The Grand Hotel Golf Resort & Spa was a natural choice. Rachel has been visiting the property since childhood, and over the years it became woven into her family’s story. One Fourth of July, Rachel, Bennett, and her family danced together at Julep Point in the very place where her grandparents had once danced. From that moment on, Rachel and Bennett knew it was where they would one day be married.

That sense of legacy guided every decision throughout the planning process. Rather than following trends, Rachel and Sunny focused on creating a celebration that felt timeless and deeply personal. The soft coastal palette complemented the beauty of Mobile Bay, while patterned linens, thoughtfully selected by Rachel’s father, added another meaningful layer to the design.

As guests arrived, candlelight cast a warm glow beneath twinkling overhead lights that echoed a star-filled sky, a subtle nod to their first dance song, “Stars Fell on Alabama.” Nearby, upholstered lounge seating invited guests to slow down, gather, and take in the celebration.

One of the evening’s most memorable details was the guest book: a large-scale map of Mobile Bay where loved ones left handwritten notes, creating a keepsake that Rachel and Bennett will treasure for years to come.

Thoughtful touches throughout the celebration reflected the couple’s story. Their signature cocktail, the Yellow Hammer, paid tribute to their time at the University of Alabama, where they first met. Bennett’s personality was woven into the reception through the band he selected, a tiramisu tower in place of a traditional groom’s cake, and a late-night biscuit bar affectionately named after their dog, Buck.

Music became one of the defining threads of the celebration. Rachel and Bennett shared their first dance to “Stars Fell on Alabama,” the same song Rachel’s parents danced to on their wedding day, creating a beautiful connection across generations. The evening came to a joyful close as guests filled the dance floor to “Sweet Home Alabama.”

Every detail was chosen with intention, resulting in a celebration that felt timeless, joyful, and uniquely their own.

The Big Day

The day began with a sense of calm anticipation as Rachel spent the morning surrounded by her closest family and bridesmaids. Before the ceremony, she and Bennett shared a private first look, followed by personal vows exchanged between just the two of them. It was a quiet, intimate moment that grounded the day in what mattered most.

As guests gathered at Grand Lawn, a floral arch framed the ceremony, allowing the natural beauty of Mobile Bay to serve as the backdrop. With the bay stretching beyond them, Rachel and Bennett said “I do” in a setting that felt both timeless and serene.

Following the ceremony, guests enjoyed cocktail hour at Julep Point, where a saxophonist filled the air with music, setting an elegant tone for the evening ahead. They then moved into the reception, where heartfelt toasts from the bride’s father and sister brought both laughter and tears. Bennett then thanked everyone for sharing in such a meaningful celebration.

As the evening unfolded, Rachel changed into her second dress, signaling the start of a lively night on the dance floor. The band kept guests celebrating late into the evening, creating an atmosphere filled with joy, energy, and great music.

For their grand exit, Rachel and Bennett made their way through a tunnel of cheering family and friends, with Bennett carrying Rachel into the next chapter of their lives together. The celebration continued just steps away at Bucky’s Lounge, where guests gathered around the fire pits for post-wedding cocktails, ending the evening with relaxed conversation and one last chance to savor an unforgettable day.

The Retreat

For their honeymoon, Rachel and Bennett will return to Hawaii in late August, exploring the Big Island and Kauai. Delaying the trip was intentional, allowing them to extend the joy of their wedding and continue celebrating the beginning of their marriage.

The destination felt like a natural choice. After visiting Maui with Rachel’s parents the year before, the islands had become a place they associated with both adventure and tranquility. Experiencing two new islands together felt like the perfect way to begin this next chapter, creating new memories in a place that had already become so meaningful to them.
