The Proposal
For Shelby and Philip, the Fourth of July is one of their favorite holidays—a family celebration filled with cooking and lawn games. They are a ranching family, so they needed to check the cow fences to make sure they were in proper order before the fireworks. They rode out side-by-side to the land, but little did Shelby know that Philip was going to propose! They celebrated with their family and had a Red, White, and I Do party. They ended the night with a fantastic firework show.
In Preparation
Preparing for Shelby and Philip’s wedding was a community effort. With the help of Shelby’s mother and their amazing vendors, the couple was able to achieve the wedding of their dreams. Drawing inspiration from backyard weddings and the film Father of the Bride, the couple chose the theme: Southern Garden Party, complete with gorgeous foliage and delicious southern foods. Shelby and Philip infused many aspects of themselves into their special day: fireworks from the proposal, a margarita glass, a cross, and their dog Hank.
The Big Day
On April 6, 2024, Shelby Choat married Philip Dougherty at her childhood home, “Veranda Oaks,” in Claremore, Oklahoma, with 300 guests in attendance. Getting ready in Shelby’s childhood home with all of her bridesmaids was a dream. The best part of her day was seeing her groom, Philip, during their first look. They wanted their first look to capture the traditional walk down the aisle, but after walking halfway, Shelby was so excited to see Philip that she began running towards him. It was truly the most magical moment of her life. In the style of a Southern Garden Party, their wedding was full of exciting, vibrant colors and fun textures. For something new, Shelby wore her new wedding dress. For something old, Shelby wore her mother’s veil from her wedding 30 years ago; something borrowed was her grandmother’s diamond earrings. The night ended perfectly with rain, as it is a sign of good luck for your marriage.
The Retreat
The newlyweds vacationed in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, and stayed at the Garza Blanca Preserve Resort and Spa. They enjoyed an ATV tour, zip-lining, and riding donkeys. The two went on a romantic sunset cruise to a deserted island and then had dinner together on the beach. They hope to take their future kids back and show them all the places they got to experience.
