The Proposal

For Sutton Orndorff, the Blue Ridge Mountains have always felt like home. Her family’s love affair with the Appalachian Mountains began generations ago, when her grandparents first owned a home in Blowing Rock. Years later, that connection deepened when her parents purchased their own place in Hound Ears Club in Boone, North Carolina. From the age of six, Sutton and her brothers were immersed in mountain life: long, sunsoaked days outdoors, evenings spent on the golf course, and the kind of close-knit community that leaves a lasting impression. So, when Sutton fell in love with Collin Hoben—a boy who grew up just up the road from her—it felt only natural that their story would continue in the place that shaped her family.

The engagement was as personal and thoughtful as the setting itself. Sutton’s mother, Tiffany, a natural hostess and lover of gatherings, orchestrated a surprise mountain weekend with the help of Collin’s mother, Kim Hoben. The days were filled with pickleball matches, carefully planned distractions, and “fake” dinner reservations to keep Sutton unsuspecting. As Sutton and Collin enjoyed the weekend, family members and a few close neighbors gathered quietly on the Hound Ears Clubhouse balcony. Against the familiar shadow of Grandfather Mountain, Collin got down on one knee on the very golf course Sutton grew up playing on and asked her to be his wife—a moment layered with history, family, and home.

In Preparation

When planning began, there was no question that Hound Ears Club would be at the heart of the wedding weekend. Shortly after securing the venue and hiring planner Tabitha Clark, everything paused as Hurricane Helene tore through the Appalachian Mountains, devastating homes and small businesses across the beloved Western North Carolina community. In the wake of the destruction, the Orndorff family made a defining decision: they would intentionally hire and uplift local vendors as a way to support the region they loved so deeply.

As the months unfolded, that commitment shaped every part of the celebration. Dozens of local hands came together to build what became a true “garden party of the year,” welcoming nearly 300 guests beneath a sprawling sailcloth tent on the Hound Ears golf course. From catering by nearby Reids, to sculptures crafted by North Carolina–based Artisan Ice, to the vibrant floral vision brought to life by Thistle and Twig from the NC foothills, every vendor involved was proudly rooted in Western North Carolina—each one a testament to the resilience and talent of the mountain community.

The Big Day

Wedding celebrations began with a gathering at Old Hampton Store and BBQ on Thursday, followed by a Friday filled with a catered bridal luncheon at Hound Ears Club, and rehearsal dinner and welcome party at The Beacon – all local, well-loved establishments. The weekend continued with a gloriously sunny November Saturday, on which Sutton and Collin exchanged vows in an intimate ceremony at Rumple Presbyterian Church in downtown Blowing Rock. Following the ceremony, guests gathered beneath the tent with Grandfather Mountain standing watch overhead. The reception was layered with lush florals, mountain-inspired textures, pottery, and soft fabrics, creating a space that felt both elevated and warmly familiar. Southern flavors filled the tables—from Sutton’s one must-have request of roasted chicken to a full raw bar, local beef carving stations, and an abundance of thoughtfully prepared bites. The celebration carried on late into the night, ending with cheers as the newlyweds made their getaway—appropriately—on the back of a Hound Ears Club golf cart.

The Retreat

After the festivities, Sutton and Collin spent a few quiet nights at Westglow Resort and Spa, soaking in the beauty of the mountains before looking ahead to their next adventure: a spring honeymoon in Aspen, where their shared love of the outdoors will continue to guide their journey together.
