The Proposal
Andrew’s birthday falls over Thanksgiving weekend, so we decided to celebrate the following weekend. On December 3, we had dinner plans at Del Frisco’s. Before dinner, Andrew suggested stopping for a drink at a nearby restaurant, which is where we had our first date. As we walked toward the front doors, we held hands and he guided me toward a closed patio. I was confused why we would take this “shortcut to the bar,” but then we stopped walking at the table where we first met and he got down on one knee and proposed. What I thought was his birthday dinner was actually a celebration of our engagement!
In Preparation
Our family and closest friends are scattered throughout the country, so we decided to bring everyone together with a destination wedding in St. Petersburg, Florida.
With distance in mind, I chose to work with Brideside because I wanted my bridesmaids to select their own dresses on their own time; Brideside allowed the girls to do just that by shopping online and having trial dresses shipped directly to their homes until they found their perfect style. Similarly, the groomsmen were able to get their tuxedos on their own time by visiting their local Jos. A Bank.
It was important to us that our wedding party and families had opportunities to get to know each other throughout the weekend. Thursday night, our wedding party and immediate families enjoyed a sunset dinner cruise together, and Friday night, all guests enjoyed a welcome reception at the beach pavilion of The Don CeSar. Throughout the weekend, everyone had time together at the beach and pool.
The Big Day
We woke up to a picture-perfect morning in Florida. Our ceremony was in Downtown Tampa at 11 a.m., so we had an early morning with hair and makeup beginning at 6 a.m. The sun stayed out all morning. That is, until we were inside the church, which is when the morning rain came.
Following the ceremony, the sun came back out for the rest of the day. Guests boarded busses back to the beach and enjoyed a luncheon at the South Terrace of The Don CeSar. After lunch, everyone had the afternoon to unwind before our cocktail and evening reception. Andrew and I relaxed in the pool with our friends, which made our day that much more fun and memorable.
Everyone freshened up and met for cocktails and passed hors d’oeuvres in the Grand Ballroom Foyer at 6:30 p.m. We celebrated the rest of the night with dinner, toasts, dancing and lots of champagne.
The Retreat
Because our wedding was a vacation itself, we decided to postpone our honeymoon until November. I had never traveled overseas and Andrew had always wanted to visit the Champagne region, so we chose to honeymoon in France.
We spent two days exploring the history of Paris before traveling to Reims, the unofficial capital of the Champagne wine-growing region and also where many of the champagne houses are headquartered. After Reims, we spent three days in Beaune touring wineries and vineyards. To see more of the country, we traveled south by train and concluded our honeymoon in Nice, where we enjoyed two days on the French Riviera.
