Lovebird Digital wedding invitation

Tradition has long guided wedding etiquette, but in the digital age, the rules surrounding etiquette are evolving. This shift is evident in the growing popularity of wedding websites—after all, how can one get married without one? While personalized paper invitations are certainly still in use, the ease of digital invitations and the convenience of immediate RSVPs leave some wondering whether these online options have become an acceptable new norm. Southern Bride consulted etiquette experts at Lovebird to discuss digital invitations and explore why they are becoming the preferred choice.

From Myka Meier, best-selling author and founder of Beaumont Etiquette:

SB: Are digital invitations proper or a sign of frugality?

Digital invitations are absolutely proper and, in today’s modern world, can be seen as efficient and practical for both the couple and guests. Digital wedding invitations are a stylish and acceptable option, especially when done thoughtfully! Platforms such as Lovebird allow for beautiful, customized designs that feel just as lux and special as printed invitations and even offer benefits like invitation RSVP tracking and menu selection.

SB: Should the bride/couple follow up with a personal email/phone call after the digital invitation?

I don’t think it’s necessary to follow up with a personal email or phone call when you send a digital invitation because that’s one of the benefits of digital invitations- you can see who has opened it and when, making it easy to track who has seen it. If you notice one person has not opened it, then a personal note or phone call to let them know you sent it is a great plan.

SB: How do the bride/couple bridge the gap between mass communication via apps/wedding websites to make guests feel like they are important to the wedding?

Adding personalized elements is key. For example, you can use your wedding website to share personal stories, like how you met or why the location is special to you, to create a connection with all your guests. Personalized seating arrangements on the big day is important, as are thank-you sections in speeches to make everyone feel valued!

SB: If guests are unable to attend, is a digital RSVP sufficient? Should they send a gift anyway?

A digital RSVP is perfectly appropriate and aligns with the tone of the invitation. As for sending a gift, my guideline is that if you are invited to a wedding, you should send a gift as a thank you for being invited to their special day. Sending a gift or contributing to the registry is a lovely way to show support even if you can’t attend.

SB: Is it proper for guests to send digital gifts, i.e., gift cards to the couple’s chosen registry?

Absolutely. Digital gifts are not only acceptable but often preferred by many tech savvy couples. They’re practical, easy to use, and allow the couple to select what they truly need or want instantly. Just make sure to choose options tied to their registry or include a personal note to make the gesture more thoughtful.

SB: Should the couple send one invitation with all the wedding details, including accommodations for out-of-town guests, or send separate communications?

One invitation with all the essential wedding details is ideal. Remember that only the main information of a wedding day is included on the digital invitation and the rest of the details should be on the wedding website, for example hotel and registry information. If you do need to update your wedding invitation, Lovebird allows instant updates which is convenient for both the couple and the guests. For out-of-town guests, include a small separate section on the wedding website with accommodation information, travel tips, and any additional logistics that are important. This keeps the main invitation streamlined and elegant while ensuring that everyone has the information they need to plan their trip.

SB: How do couples bridge the gap between mass communication via apps/wedding websites to make guests feel like they are important to the wedding?

When engaged couples anticipate the needs of their guests and are thoughtful about the information they share, guests will feel important. Whether that is a tip on the wedding website that the Mets are in town that weekend, a digital RSVP that includes a question about special dietary requirements, or a digital thank you card personalized with a photo of the couple posing with their new blender – that care, consideration, and personalization is what matters.
