A couple’s first dance often reflects their journey leading up to that special moment when they are announced as a married couple about to take the dance floor together. The song may be something they heard on the radio during a rainy night or a track they enjoyed dancing to on a memorable date night. But what about choosing a song that sets the tone for the rest of their life? Dylan Arms’ newest single, “The Real Thing,” beautifully captures the essence of marital commitment, making it a meaningful choice for a first dance. The South Carolina-based singer shares with Southern Bride the inspiration behind the song.
Dylan, congratulations on the release of “The Real Thing”! Can you tell us what inspired the song?
Thank you! This one is really close to my heart. I wrote it for my wife—it’s about the kind of love that isn’t always flashy or dramatic, but it shows up every single day. The kind of love that holds steady through the highs and the lows. It came from our real life—years of growing together, supporting each other, and building something that feels lasting.
How would you describe the feeling or message of the song?
The heart of it is all about commitment, choosing someone over and over again. It’s warm and reflective, kind of like a quiet moment between two people who’ve seen each other through all the highs and lows. I wanted it to feel sincere and grounded, like a snapshot of what real love can look like over time.
You released both a full band and an acoustic version. Why?
Each version brings out something different in the song. The full band version feels a little more cinematic; it has that sort of “first dance under the lights” energy to it. The acoustic version is more stripped-down and intimate, like it’s being sung in a quiet room just for two. I wanted to give couples both experiences, depending on what fits their story.
What makes “The Real Thing” a good choice as a wedding song?
I think it resonates because it speaks to the kind of love marriage is built on, not just the butterflies, but the commitment to stay and grow together. It’s not flashy, but it’s full of heart. I hope it feels like a reminder of the vows being made, something couples can come back to years down the road and still feel the weight and beauty of it.
What do you hope couples feel when they hear it?
I hope they feel seen. Whether they’re just starting out or have been together for a while, I hope the song reminds them of what makes their connection real. It’s a love song, sure, but it’s also kind of a quiet promise.
Is there anything else you would like to share about your music?
Yes! I just released an EP called Where We Begin, which includes “The Real Thing” along with a few other songs that dig into themes of love, family, and faith. I also have a kids and family project called Made to Worship that has just been released, and it’s been such a fun and meaningful creative space for me as a new dad. You can find all of it on streaming platforms, and I’d love to connect on social media too.
Whether you’re walking down the aisle or dancing under the stars, “The Real Thing” is a song that celebrates love as it deepens over time. This track is one that couples can revisit throughout their journey together to gently remind them of the reasons they are together. Consider adding it to your playlist for any special occasion.
