The Proposal
Jay and I went to Charleston for a long weekend in April of 2017. Charleston is our favorite place in the world! We spent the weekend relaxing at the Isle of Palms and strolling the streets of Downtown Charleston. One night we went to dinner at Magnolias and took a walk on The Battery. I was not suspicious of anything the whole weekend. He did a really great job of hiding any nerves he may have had. As we were walking on The Battery we started talking about our future, our goals, and where we saw ourselves in the next few years. As I turned to look out at the water, Jay grabbed my hand and got down on one knee and proposed. I said yes and the rest is history!
In Preparation
Jay and I love Charleston! It has held so many special memories for us like family vacations at Folly Beach, weekend trips, and getting engaged on The Battery. We knew that Charleston would be our dream wedding destination. We decided to have our wedding at Lowndes Grove. The Ashley River, and the scenery made it the perfect spot. My wedding planner produced my vision of a perfect wedding. I could not have asked for better vendors that were part of our wedding day. They all went above and beyond to create our perfect fairytale wedding.
The Big Day
Our wedding day was meaningful and special in so many different ways. With Jays family being in South Carolina and mine in North Carolina we had state flags that represented both sides. For my something new, my Mother had a necklace made for me. It had a small sunshine charm. Our Father/Daughter dance was “You are my Sunshine”. My something old was a ring my Father gave my Mother. It was the first piece of jewelry he gave her. The flower girl basket was a family heirloom that has been carried in several weddings on my Mother’s side of the family. Jay wore cuff links from his Grandfather who was a former Baptist Preacher. We had “fun facts” for both of us and family pictures throughout the home. Family is important to both of us, and we wanted to incorporate past and present traditions as much as possible. Although most of our guests only knew one of us well before the wedding, we wanted them leaving feeling like they were now part of one big family. With the wedding being in December, we used rich jewel tones and greenery. I love a wedding with color and for that time of year, the jewel tones added a special touch.
The Retreat
We spent a week-long honeymoon in Exuma, Bahamas this past June. The Bahama Islands have always been a vacation destination for my family as we have traveled to Cat Island and Nassau several times over the years. The Bahama Islands are beautiful and the blue turquoise water is hard to beat! Jay and I are big on checking things off of our bucket list and have wanted to travel to Exuma for a while. We stayed at Sandals on an oceanfront house with a butler. We swam with the wild pigs, snorkeled, island hopped, ate lots of delicious food, and most importantly relaxed and enjoyed being married!
